The 2014 growing season was as close to ideal as a grape grower or winemaker could hope for. Perfect weather conditions early in the year fostered a timely spring bud-break, steady flowering and even fruit set. The summer followed with a lengthy stretch of warm days and cool, foggy nights, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and steadily. Our Zinfandel grapes, sourced from several Old Vine Zinfandel vineyards in some of the best appellation in Sonoma County (Russian River Valley, Sonoma, Valley, Alexander valley and Dry Creek Valley) for our Reserve Zinfandel and Lodi for our Original Zinfandel were hand-picked over a period of several weeks as each vineyard and block ripened to optimal maturity.
Hand picked and de-stemmed in the cool, early morning hours to preserve freshness and acidity, our Reserve Zinfandel grapes were gently whole cluster pressed and fermented with pump overs three times daily. Extended maceration and Malolactic fermentation enhanced color, structure and mouthfeel. 12 months of aging in small new and seasoned French and American oak barrels imparts subtle notes of clove and spice to this special wine.
